“Produced by 'Art France' for the French newspaper - La République Du Centre, this enamel sign has the unusual inclusion of a blackboard section.
The sign was probably hung at one of the newspaper's distributers and would have had the day's headline chalked onto the main section. The lower strap line translates to 'read in every home'. La République Du Centre started publishing newspapers in 1944 and is still doing so today - this sign is likely to date from the 1950s, possibly 60s.
Condition wise the sign does have some enamel loss to the corners and there are a few areas (particularly the lower right) where the blue enamel has worn through to the lower white base coat. The black board section also has a couple of dents/scratches. Despite some damage the sign still has good, bright colours, the writing remains clear and the screw holes in each corner are structurally sound making for easy hanging. Whilst most enamel signs are purely decorative this example actually has form and function and would make the perfect addition to a kitchen for the shopping list, 'to-dos' etc.”
