“An ornate and highly decorative lithograph of “Leda” by Paul-Jacques-Aimé Baudry (1828 - 1886). This allegorical work depicts the tale of Leda and the Swan, a story from Greek mythology. It’s said that Zeus, upon setting eyes on the beautiful Leda, transformed into a swan and persuaded her to sleep with him (don’t dwell on that thought). But later that night, she also slept with her husband, King Tyndareus, and as a result bore four children - two by each father.
Baudry was a multi-award winning French artist that specialised in mythological subjects. This particular piece won an award in 1857, so it’s no surprise that it was reproduced to such a high standard in Paris.
Medium: Lithograph on paper
Year of creation: 1859
Condition: As you can see, the lithograph is showing some signs of its age and the frame has a few chips here and there.”
