“J. Lyons & Co opened their first tea shop in Piccadilly, London in 1894 - a huge success, in 1909 the brand expanded into more teashops, restaurants and hotels. From the 1930s Lyons began to develop a "pioneering" range of teas, biscuits and cakes that were sold in grocery stores across the world. It's highly likely that this sign was produced to promote the special tea blend the company retailed and, being the earliest variant of the company's logo is likely to date from the 1930s/40s.

The quality of the enamel is excellent, the colours bright and the typography bold.

Condition is reasonable, there are some areas of enamel loss - particularly around the screw holes, though corrosion is fairly minimal. There is also some areas of surface scratching (see photos).

The sign has been mounted onto a simple wooden frame for ease of hanging and can either be hung from mirror plates attached to the frame or by using the original screw holes.”
