“This is a truly special piece. There is something both mysterious, touching and beautiful about this image. The image features two sitters which from a different service both proudly furnished in their uniforms. You can just make out the putties on the legs of the army officer a real feature off WW1 battledress. One can only guess that the sitters were relatives, perhaps father and son? The only clue is a faint indent of handwriting on the rear which might hint at the sitter’s identities.
If you look closely you can see that some of the fainter parts of the image such as one of the men’s feet have been drawn in by hand, a common practise in the days before photoshop! I love the patina of the photograph which is unusually large, far larger than others I have seen from the era. I also love the frame with its scrapes and paint wear. It has gained a really lovely patina while still remaining solid.”
