Vintage taxidermy is full of intrigue. It was ridiculously popular in the Victorian era, when most homes had a stuffed bird or mammal of some description. Although most professional taxidermists had stopped trading by the 1970s, there’s undoubtedly been a resurgence of interest – especially in vintage antlers.
We stock loose antlers along with mounted pairs and taxidermy heads. Framed butterflies and oddities – such as taxidermy cutlery – are regular sights too.
A lot of taxidermy showcases birds and mammals as they would be found in the wild. Vintage taxidermy is a way for your interiors to appeal to wild imaginations, tell a story and incite curiosity. You’ll find animals cased in natural-looking surroundings like an owl perched on a stick. Pheasants, partridges and other birds are especially popular.
Other curiosities will show animals taking part in human activities – frogs in a duel or squirrels in a classroom. As you’d expect, they’re quite the talking point.
Of course, some people will find vintage taxidermy freaky – but they are many who find it fabulous. It’s a kind of old-world style some will always embrace. If that’s you, our team of dealers are always searching for new rarities.
