About the artist: H R Rishworth (1891-1991).

British born Rishworth, was a surgeon - where his experience in India throughout the first world war determined the course of his medical career. He was given a commission in the Indian Medical Service on the outbreak of war with Afghanistan and was sent to Alexandria and Constantinople, evacuating russian refugees. On demobilisation Rishworth went on to spend two years as a house surgeon at Charing Cross Hospital. Returning to India in 1923, he became responsible for the medical service of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway. By 1929 Rishworth had moved to Bombay where he was appointed Commander of the Order of St John. For his public services he was awarded an OBE, later advanced to a CBE. After the 2nd World War, Rishworth returned to England but eventually moved on to Baghdad as director of the medical service of Iraq State Railways. The Nigerian government subsequently requested him to report on the medical service of its railways. For this he travelled the entire railways system before writing a book on railway medical services in developing countries. On settling in the United Kingdom - Rishworth worked as a surgical specialist in the Ministry of Pensions until 1961.

After retiring he pursued many interests; his chief delight being painting - in watercolours and oils. Rishworth died on Valentine’s day 1991, age 100.”
