Robert Wyatt. Comicopera

What the papers say
‘It’s hard to imagine a record more original or full of life, from any artist of any age, emerging this year.  It’s that damn good.’  Mojo.

If you want to try a long, complex and richly-rewarding album by one of the most intelligent and enduring voices in British music try...

Who is he?
A former member of Soft Machine. He made his first solo album in 1970.

What do I get?
In 1973 Wyatt fell, inebriated, from a third floor window. He’s been in a wheel chair ever since, but his restless, creative spirit has flourished and Comicopera may well be the finest album of a distinguished career.  It’s a long and complex album, split into three segments, each separated by an intermission.  But don’t let this put you off.  This may be an album that will take time to offer up all of its pleasures, but it is also immediately beautiful and lovable. Second track, Just As You Are, a duet with Brazilian singer Monica Vasconcelos, is one of the most immediate and lovable songs to be released this year.

And?
Wyatt’s version of Elvis Costello’s Shipbuilding is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.  Fact!  If you don’t believe us, check it out.
