'An excellent Christmas album, a gem... frothy and poppy. A lovely addition to the season.' CD of the week.
The Sunday Times.
Impossible! Surely? A Christmas album bursting with original material that is every bit as good as the best traditional Christmas pop songs, but which never resorts to tired cliches. A Sunflower at Christmas is a brilliant record; one which embraces the much-maligned genre of Christmas pop music, but reinvents it with panache. We love a good Christmas album. And this is up there with the best. All hail The Pearlfishers!
This bold effort is a genuine triumph; a sincere, joyful celebration of Christmas which includes sleighbells, the odd carol, fantastic harmonies, a song about snowboarding and a snowman on it's cover... but without ever resorting to cheesiness.
At the heart of this brilliant record is singer/songwriter David Scott's knack for writing lovley, quirky pop songs that overflow with sublime 60s instrumentation. A Sunflower... oozes harmonies; the influence of The Beach Boys, Cole Porter and Phil Spector is writ large here. These are songs that you'll want to listen to time and time again; simple/complex gems that ooze charm and joy. Often delicate and sparkling, always rich, warm and upbeat, sometimes funny; this inspiring set of songs deserves a place in every Christmas-loving home.
The Pearlfishers have achieved the impossible. Enjoy!
